It has to be noted that the displays in Xperia Z, ZL and the older smartphone models have TFT displays that have been condemned as they produce washed out colors and very poor viewing angles. But, with the emergence of these technologies the display of the firm’s devices are more vibrant with wide viewing angles. Though the Xperia Z1 announced last year also faced some issues with its displays, but 6 months later, Sony is back in game with its new flagship Xperia Z2, which delivers what we expect from Sony after decades of experience in manufacturing LCD displays.

Sony is always known for its splendid display technology right from the time it was involved in making television sets. Also, in the initial days in the smartphone industry, Sony started letting out Bravia Engine equipped display panels for its mobiles, the technology adopted from the TV displays. But, the smartphone displays lacked speciality even then, and there came the TRILUMINOS and X-Reality Engine to the resuce. Now, lets take an in-depth look of what these new technologies actually deliver to improve the quality of Sony displays.

TRILUMINOS

TRILUMINOS Display technology allows the TFT displays to exhibit more colors thereby displaying images in a more vivid manner. For instance, the greens appear greener and the reds appear more red. In other words, the TRILUMINOS display provides a color gamut that is 50 percent larger than the ones offered by the conventional LCD display panels. In order to display the widest possible color range, the technology uses quantum dots that are none other than light emitting nano-particles (2-10 nanometers). These components emit light at a precise wavelength based on their size, which the human eye can perceive as a particular color.

Instead of the white backlight used in the traditional LCD panels to pass through the conventional RGB (Red, Blue and Green) filters, blue LED light is passed through a film of quantum dots in the TRILUMINOS display to produce the colors. Consequently, the end result is a range of pure and natural looking colors that translate to better viewing angles and rich graphics. This is how the Sony smartphones launched these days provide outstanding display quality than their challengers.

X-Reality Engine

Another technology that distinguishes the Sony displays is X-Reality, which is an image processing tech responsible for enhancing the quality of the content displayed on the screen. This technology actually makes the images appear sharper than even before by minimizing the noise, improving the contrast and fine tuning the saturation to desired levels. Prior to introducing the X-Reality Engine to the smartphones, Sony has been using its X-Reality and X-Reality Pro image processing techniques on its range of top-tier TVs. While viewing low-resolution videos, the X-Reality Engine makes sure to restore the lacking details to deliver magnificent high resolution results. Also, this technique has a Super Resolution technology that makes the images look more down-to-earth.

According to Sony, the X-Reality image processing technique splits the signal sent to the display into various components such as color, contrast, outline and texture. Each of these components are analyzed and processed individually to make sure that the end result is the sharpest, clearest and most attractive.
