Samsung launched the Galaxy M40 in India at a price tag of Rs. 19,990. Ahead of the launch, we manage to spend some time with the handset and here are our first impressions about it.
Galaxy M40 First Impressions
Design and Display
The Galaxy M40 may not the best looking Galaxy M series phone, however, it comes with a glossy polycarbonate back panel. And the Midnight Blue color version that we have for the review looks pretty cool.
The back panel houses the triple camera setup that is vertically aligned on the top left corner. There’s an oval-shaped fingerprint sensor above the Samsung branding.
The next thing you will notice in the Galaxy M40 is the absence of 3.5mm headphone jack. However, Samsung has compensated it by bundling a USB Type-C headphone in the box. There is no earpiece as well and the phone uses screen sound tech to use the display as a speaker.
The front of the phone looks different from other Galaxy M phones. Samsung brings punch-hole camera display from Galaxy S10 phones to a mid-range phone. The phone sports a 6.3-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD screen. The display sports an impressive 91.8 percent screen-to-body ratio to offer a more immersive viewing experience. Overall, design and display wise, the Galaxy M40 looks great.
Cameras
In the camera department, it sports a triple-camera setup with a 32-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel depth camera, and an 8-megapixel 123-degree wide-angle lens. The camera comes with standard features like portrait mode, slo-mo video recording, etc.
It has a 16-megapixel front shooter placed in the display. The initial pictures taken by both front and rear cameras look pretty impressive especially pictures shot using portrait mode.
Performance
The device is powered by a Snapdragon 675 processor, which is one of the best chipsets in the mid-range segment for power users and gamers. It is further paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The storage can be expanded up to 512GB via microSD card.
The Galaxy M40 runs on Samsung’s latest One UI interface based on Android 9 Pie and it brings a slew of features to the phone. Overall, performance wise, we did not find any issue in our initial testing.
Battery and Others
Powering the Galaxy M40 is a 3,500mAh battery that comes with support for 15W fast charging. The phone has all the usual connectivity features and there is a fingerprint scanner on the back which is pretty fast.
Wrapping Up
Samsung Galaxy M40 is the top-notch Galaxy M series phone with a new punch-hole design. Samsung offers pretty much everything in a mid-range phone that makes it look premium. The SD 675 chipset, triple cameras, and fast charging battery make it even more competitive. With this hardware, it will be pitted against Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 Pro. So, stay tuned for our comparison.
