Display and Processor

The Oppo R5 gets a 5.2 inch AMOLED display with FHD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels translating to a pixel density of 423 pixels per inch. The Gionee offering, on the other hand flaunts a 5 inch Super AMOLED display that carries an identical FHD screen resolution that will result in a slightly better pixel density of 441 pixels per inch. However, this minor difference in the pixel density is not likely to create a major difference in the usability of the panels. Moreover, both the screens are layered with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection that will make them stronger and scratch resistant. The R5 is stuffed with a 64 bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC supplemented with Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. In comparison, the Gionee offering employs a Mediatek MT6592 octa-core chipset coupled Mali 450 MP4 graphics unit and a similar 2 GB of RAM for efficient multi-tasking. The former is better as it is based on the big.LITTLE architecture that will maximize the performance and enhance the battery life.

Camera and Internal Storage

The Oppo phone gets a 13 MP primary camera unit with auto focus, LED flash, f.2,0 aperture and support for 2160p video recording. Also, there is a 5 MP front-facer onboard that can also make video calls and click gorgeous seflies. Going by comparison, the Elife S5.5 also incorporates a 13 MP primary camera with auto focus and LED flash. It also comes with 95 degree ultra-wide angle view lens for better low-light performance and features a similar 5 MP front facing shooter. There appears to be not much difference between the two in terms of raw hardware. Similarly, both the devices come with identical aspects in the storage department bundling 16 GB native storage capacity that cannot be expanded externally as there is no micro SD card. Of course, it would be an issue for those users who tend to store too many content on their smartphones, but there are cloud storage services to reply on in that case.

Battery and Operating System

Oppo has bestowed the R5 with a juicier 2,000 mAh battery unit while the Elife S5.5 comes with a 2,300 mAh battery. Though the latter appears to pump a longer backup, the former comes with the VOOC charging technology that can help it recharge from 0 percent to 75 percent in just 30 minutes of charging. Oppo R5 and Gionee Elife S5.5 run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, but the former is based on Color OS 2.0 and the latter on Amigo UI. Otherwise, there is not much difference between the two as they both arrive with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and USB OTG connectivity aspects. The R5 does not have a  3.5mm audio jack onboard, but the micro USB port can be converted to a 3.5mm audio jack adapter or the wireless O-Music accessory can help. Furthermore, the Oppo offering is made of a phase shifting material that is responsible for cooling the device.

Key Specs

Conclusion

The Oppo R5 and Gionee Elife S5.5 are almost identical in terms of hardware aspects. They have different chipsets, of which the Oppo offering appears to be better with its 64 bit SoC that would get into complete action after the handset receives the Android Lollipop update, though we have no clues on when it will get it. Moreover, the Oppo R5 breaks cover as the slimmest smartphone in world with its 4.85 mm thin profile, but it has compromised on the 3.5mm headphone jack for this purpose.
