Folks at iFixit have done their Moto 360 teardown and the results might be considered slightly disappointing. The OMAP 3630 SoC used inside the new Moto 360 is, in fact, 4 years old. This however, is no reason to doubt the ability of this Cortex A8 SoC with PowerVR SGX 530 GPU in powering the new Moto 360. Smartwaches don’t require as much horse power to get through what they are meant for. Since the SoC is formed on 45 nm Process, the choice sounds bizarre as a 28 nm SoC would have delivered similar performance with lower power consumption. Speaking of which, the battery inside is rated as 300 mAh, contrary to 320 mAh which was advertised by Motorola. Motorola has responded to the allegations by stating that 300 mAh is the minimum limit and space constraints on the battery surface didn’t allow them to list the upper 320 mAh limit. Doesn’t sound convincing? You are not alone here.
On further inspection the battery capacity was actually found to be 289 mAh, which appears to nullify the upper limit – lower limit argument. Overall reparability score is 3/10 which means- Do not attempt to cross check these facts yourself. We wouldn’t mind a dated smartphone SoC in modern smartwatch if it helps keep the price in check without compromising much on performance and experience.
