Hardware

Display

The phone comes with a very standard 5 inch display. This is one size we’ve seen on a load of budget Android phones. On the S5 Plus, the 5 inch panel features a resolution of 960 c 540 pixels, also known as qHD. The device does not have the best display resolution, with phones like XOLO Q1000 featuring 720p panels of the same size for a little more. You can think of it as a device for professionals, or anyone who does not indulge in multimedia activities too much.

Camera and Storage

The phone comes with an 8MP camera at the rear paired up with a VGA front shooter. The numbers themselves do not sound too exciting. You can expect ‘entry-level’ images from this device. Picture quality should and would be at par with other devices with an 8MP camera. We’re talking domestic devices, of course. The phone has 4GB of storage like many other domestic branded smartphones. We’ve said it innumerable times and we’ll say it again; manufacturers need to move to at least 8GB ROM on-board. The device does have a microSD slot for further expansion which you probably will need.

Processor and Battery

It comes with a 1.3GHz quad core processor from MediaTek, which is a variant of the latest quad core solution, the MT6582. The MT6582 is a little more powerful than the standard MT6589, but with a less powerful GPU. This clearly means that the phone will be a better device than other quad core phones if processing grunt is what you’re looking for. If you want a better gaming experience, it would be a good idea to go with MT6589T phones like the Micromax Canvas Magnus. The device comes with a very disappointing 1800mAh battery. It will be difficult for you to go through one entire day on a single charge with this battery.

Form Factor and Competitors

Design

The phone features a very standard design, like you’ve seen on most domestic branded phones. The candy bar look however goes well and is a classic.

Conclusion

Devices like the XOLO Q1000 feature a higher-res screen for a little more money than what the S5 Plus asks for. Also, since most potential buyers would be looking for a smooth gaming experience, it might be a good idea to go for MT6589T powered phones like the Micromax Canvas Magnus, etc.
