Quark SoC will be 32 nm chipset with 32 bit single core single thread processor. this will be one fifth of the size of the Intel Atom processors which we have seen in smartphones like XOLO X1000 , and will consume one tenth of its power. The production of Quark Soc is expected to begin by the end of this year and we will get to see the first samples in early 2014. The first chipset will be Quark X1000 SoC.
Intel’s Atom processor wasn’t a huge success but it did leave its mark. This is the first chip from Intel which can integrate with third party IP blocks, which means any OEM can choose custom I/O, graphics, storage, or WiFi/3G radios of their choice with this SoC. The chipset will be based on X86 architecture similar to Intel Atom. In the last couple of weeks we have seen samrtwatches like Samsung Galaxy gear, Qualcomm toq, Sony smartwatch 2, and Nissan Nismo. We can expect many more devices from Chinese manufacturers and other lower brands soon and Intel’s new Quark SoC might find its place in these devices.
