Play Lossless Music on iPhone

Earlier this year, Apple and Spotify, the popular music streaming services have started offering lossless audio support. Apple is currently offering over 20 million lossless tracks in its Apple Music library and plans to feature 75 million tracks by the year-end. So, what is this lossless audio, and how can you play it on your iPhone?

What is lossless audio?

If you are unaware, Lossless Audio is a file format that compresses the original audio file without compromising on quality, which means it preserves all the attributes of the song including depth to keep its originality intact. Apple offers this with the help of its advanced compression algorithm known as ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). Apple offers two types of Lossless Audio – standard lossless and Hi-Res lossless. The standard lossless audio is usually CD-quality audio and its resolution is 16-bit and 44.1kHz, while the Hi-Res lossless audio goes all the way up to 24-bit and 192 kHz.

What do you need to play lossless music?

Before moving forward to the process of playing lossless audio on the iPhone, check the basic requirements first: First of all, make sure that your device is compatible to play lossless audio which means it should be running iOS 14.6, iPadOS 14.6, macOS 11.4, and tvOS 14.6 or later versions. Android users running Apple Music v3.6.0 can also enjoy lossless audio. It should be noted here that Apple’s proprietary earphones, including AirPods, AirPods Pro do not have Lossless Audio support. However, the lightning to 3.5mm converter from Apple supports this format.

Steps to follow to play lossless audio

To get started with lossless music streaming on iPhone, you will need to enable it first. Follow the steps below to do that:

  1. Go to “Settings” on your iPhone and scroll down to the “Music” settings.
  2. Here, tap on “Audio Quality” and then enable the toggle next to “Lossless Audio”.
  3. After this, you will see the options to choose streaming quality for Wi-Fi and Mobile Data, as well as Downloads. You should choose the “Hi-Res Lossless” for both WiFi and mobile data to play high-quality lossless music on your iPhone and that’s all.   Now you can go to the Apple Music app and there you will see the “Lossless” and “Apple Digital Master” tags under albums and tracks. Tap play to enjoy lossless music on iPhone. Apart from this, you can also check your Apple TV Settings and Mac setting as well to customize the lossless audio experience on these devices too. So, this is how you can play lossless music on your iPhone or iPad via the Apple Music app. This is a great feature for Apple Music subscribers but the lack of support for AirPods makes it hard for many to enjoy the music. Hopefully, Apple will launch the latest AirPods at this year’s fall event with the support for lossless audio streaming. For more such tips and tricks, stay tuned!
