Google has made this possible with the eSIM technology. The company says that there have been many changes in the smartphones look and feel, as well as behave over the past few years. However the one thing that has remained constant ever since the first mobile phone was created right till today is the fact that they still need SIM Cards. With the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, it all changes.

This is possible with the help of Project Fi. Google states that the Pixel 2 is the first ever smartphone to come out with a built-in eSIM. This makes it  possible for the users of the Pixel 2 to quickly connect to a carrier network by just tapping a few buttons! Users no longer need to get a physical SIM card and wait for it’s activation. Also, gone are the days when you’d need to eject the SIM tray with that pin and pop your SIM card in place. Pixel 2 changes everything, at least for the Project Fi users. Google states that connecting to carrier networks will soon become as easy as connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

This option will be available in all Google Pixel 2 devices purchased via the Google Store or purchased via Project Fi. There’s an option for ‘SIM-Free Setup’ which the users would get while setting up their phone. It is possible that we might see this technology in more Android smartphones over the years as Google said they are working with ‘industry partners’ to encourage a widespread adaption of this technology. SIM cards could soon be a thing of the past! Source: Google
