Before we get into how to identify music using the Google Assistant, it is critical to know that feature has come out only for those users who are using the Assistant in four of the following languages: English (US), Japanese, French and German. Even for these users, it hasn’t rolled out for all the users at once but it is coming out in a phased rollout. In the past, this feature was only on the newly released Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. However, users of the OnePlus 5 and even older devices such as OnePlus One and Nextbit Robin are reportedly getting it. Make sure your phone’s Google Assistant is set to using one of the four supported languages. If there’s music playing in the background, Google Assistant will automatically show a ‘What’s this song’ option. If that option does not appear, you can simply ask your assistant – ‘What is this song’ or ‘Which song is playing in the background’. The Assistant will then ‘listen’ to the song and a few bars will appear. You will then be shown which song is playing in the background, along with the lyrics, details on the singer, and the option to play it on YouTube and Google Play Music.
