Google is now working towards giving Gmail for web a material makeover. It is one of the last major services which has a non-material design. This is now a part of Google’s plans for Gmail but as of now there’s no deadlines as to when this change might finally come along.

A material makeover for Gmail for Web has been in the pipeline for a really long time. It looks like the company might actually revamp it up for later this year. Two major Google services got updated to Material UI this year – Earlier in August we saw the Google Calendar app getting this update for some users, following which even YouTube got a material makeover. Gmail for Web is likely to be the next major name to get this update. Google points out at this change in the NEXT Live EMEA 2017 G Suite product roadmap talk. While this talk happened a while ago, this news has only come to light now. In addition to a material makeover for Gmail for Web, Google also plans to introduce some other features on the web version – smart replies, smart grouping and snooze. Smart replies were introduced for Inbox by Gmail users. Snoozing and Grouping of mails too, has been a part of Inbox for quite a while now. For now, the material makeover is what we are excited the most for. This new look and feel for Gmail would ensure that those blocks and chunky layouts are gone and replaced by a cleaner, smoother UI. No word on when this update would be rolling out though. Stay tuned with us for more details on this new look of Gmail for Web. Source: Android Police
