This is a part of the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s “Digi Yatra” policy to promote “digital processing of passengers” based on facial recognition system at airport checkpoints. The trial will offer the passengers a seamless flow of the entry process at airports. The facial recognition-based entry system process has already been started by the Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai airports.
How it will work?
The enrollment process for the passengers with valid flight tickets will start at the registration desk at the airport. After that, the facial details will be captured by the camera. Meanwhile, the documents provided by passengers will be validated by a CISF personnel present at the kiosk. He will physically check the IDs and confirm the same on the system. The passengers will have to scan their boarding passes or e-tickets at the departure e-gate, which will have cameras. The gates will then open automatically after the facial recognition is completed.
Now, passengers can proceed towards the check-in counters to drop their baggage. If they do not have any, they can head straight to the security screening. Here again, the facial recognition cameras will recognize the passenger’s registered face and these gates too will open automatically and passengers can board the flight once the security check is done.
What will happen to the data?
As per the airport authority, there will be no storage of the biometric data by the airport. The biometric details of the passengers will be stored temporarily to enable the departure process. Once the flight departs, the data of the registered passengers will be deleted.
